"This beautiful Middle Eastern Jewish symbol comes from the Hebrew word meaning "five." The five fingers of the hand represents the quintessence or "fifth" essence of our spiritual connection to the Holy One. Throughout the world the hand is used to gesture "hello" to welcome both the Divine and friends into our lives. It is also the hand gesture of "goodbye" and "stop." In this sense the Hamsa invokes Divine protection. Finally, the Hamsa represents the female, nurturing aspect of the Holy One whose hand holds us close. The five fingers represent that which is beyond logic and nature and thereby invokes all the good the spiritual blessings we want in our lives." (Quote from my Rebbe, David Zaslow.) In the Vedic and Buddhist traditions the Hamsa, which is a mudra seen on various deities, often means to "fear not".
