THE VIRGIN MARY (Our Lady of Guadelupe, Tonantzin)

In December 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared four times to Juan Diego in Guadalupe, Mexico.  At that time the Bishop that literally enslaved the native Aztecas, a dozen years after the conquistadores had conquered the locals.  Each time the Virgin was a source of hope and comfort to Jaun, and the fourth time red roses miraculously bloomed at  her feet despite the bitter winter cold.  She told Jaun to take the the roses and wrap them in his tilma, and carry them to the Bishop as proof of her presence.  When he unwrapped them, her image was imprinted on his garment.  The imprint still hangs at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and millions of people come each year to pray to the dark skinned Lady, whom they call Tonantzin.
